How to get your P1 LicenceLearn Drive Survive
What is the process for getting your P1 Licence?
Are you ready for your P1 Licence? Are you 17 years of age or older? Have you completed your Learner Driver Log Book? Have you held your learner licence for at least 12 months? If you can answer YES to these questions, you will be able to have a go at the driving test. If you successfully pass the driving test, you will be issued a provisional P1 licence.
Like any test, it would be a great idea to do some study first. Attend any registry or RMS centre and get yourself a copy of A Guide to the Driving Test or otherwise download a copy online from the Roads & Maritime Services site. The driving test guide will provide you with valuable information about what to expect during the driving test, as well as other reminders regarding safe driving, driving skills and more.
Once you read through the guide and feel confident and ready, there are a number of ways to book your test. You can go ahead and book your driving test online, attend any registry or RMS centre or call 13 22 13. To avoid any disappointment or delays, you need to ensure that you provide the following;
- You must take your completed log book with you. Ensure that it is endorsed by your supervising driver.
- Make sure that your vehicle is in a good roadworthy condition. This includes making sure that all of the lights must work properly, the tyres have sufficient tread and there is no chips or crack in the windscreen.
- When you attend a registry or service centre, you will need to take proof of I.D and cash, debit or credit card to pay for your P1 licence. Proof of identification can include a NSW photo driver/rider licence or NSW Photo Card that is current, or has expired within the last two years (provided it’s not recorded as lost, stolen or destroyed) OR two (2) documents from list 1 and list 2.Please Note:All List 1 documents must show your full name, and the day, month and year of your birth. For verification reasons, the RMS may decide to conduct further checks on any issued document with that particular issuing authority.All documents must be original and authentic. Any copies and/or certified copies are not acceptable.
- Be punctual.
When am I eligible to to get my P2 Licence?
You don’t just automatically progress to the next stage of the licence process. You can apply for a P2 driver’s licence once you have you have held your P1 licence for 12 months. If after the 12 month period you are eligible, you can try your luck at the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). If you are successful and pass the HPT, you’ll be issued a provisional P2 licence.
